The inside dimensions of an urn are measured in cubic inches. Generally,

the total cubic inches should be equal to or less than the weight of the pet

(or human) while living. this is a rough estimate and it will depend upon

whether you wish to place the entire volume of the cremains

(ashes) of the pet (or human) into the urn. You may choose to

spread some of the pet's (or human's) ashes in another location.

For example, you may wish to spread some of the ashes of your deceased

pet or loved one in a location outdoors where they particularly enjoyed spending

time. You may also choose an urn that is somewhat smaller in cubic inches

than theweight of your pet and divide the ashes into the urn you choose

here and perhaps the metal or wooden urngiven to you by the crematorium.

In determining the appropriate size of the inside dimensions of the urn measured in cubic inches, it is not always equal to one cubic inch per pound of the pet's (or human's) weight, but more accurately the size of the pet's frame, or bone density, will determine the volume of ashes. One cubic inch per pound of the pet's weight while living is a very general estimate in determining the appropriate size of the urn....

but we recommend that you use that as a guideline.

When you received the ashes of your pet from the crematorium, they most likely placed them into a plastic bag and then placed that bag inside the temporary urn you received. If you are choosing an urn offered by Custom Engraving Services, we will provide you with a thinner plastic bag that you will place inside the urn. You will then transfer the ashes of your pet into the plastic bag inside the urn you ordered from us. We provide a plastic bag that may be thinner than the one the crematorium gave you so the the bag itself will fill the least amount of volume inside the urn and you will have more room for the ashes of your pet. This will be particularly useful if you are ordering our smallest urn, the "jar shaped" porcelain photo urn for cats and small dogs that is approximately 10 cubic inches in inside dimensions. If your cat or small dog weighed much more than 10 pounds you should probably choose a larger urn. Alternatively, you may want to divide the ashes into two locations as described above.
